A successful garden room is not the one that supports the greatest number of theoretical uses. It is the one that supports its primary job comfortably, safely and repeatedly through the seasons. Use painter’s tape, cardboard and existing furniture to create a full-scale plan on the proposed footprint or another room. Include chair movement, door swing, cabinet opening, a second person passing and the equipment in use—not just its stored dimensions.

Specify the building envelope before the interior mood

The foundation, floor, walls, roof, openings and junctions work as one system.
